Lucy Mae Barnes was born April 12, 1928 to Marshall and Lucille Hughes in Hodges, AR. She was the oldest of 10 children.
The family moved to the Grant Place when she was 15 years old. Lucy attended elementary school at Union Liberty Church where she was also a member of the church. Lucy moved to St. Louis at the age of 16 and started working in a chicken factory. On a train ride back home to Arkansas from St. Louis she met the love of her life, James Barnes, Sr. They later married and were blessed with eight children.
